Roman Days

Roman Days

Avé!

Did you know that many of our every-day comforts were first introduced by the Romans? Notebooks, the use of money, various recipes, and even our network of roads all originated with these impressive people! During the Romeinse Dagen (Roman Days) in the preHistorisch Dorp, you will have the chance to discover how the Romans lived in Brabant more than 2,000 years ago. So be sure to mark Ascension 2025 in your calendar, as our open-air museum will be overrun by Romans from May 29 to June 1 - just like they did two millennia ago!

The Romans

Just before the start of the Common Era, the Romans reached what we now call the Netherlands. This marked the end of prehistoric times, as written records from that moment onward began to tell the stories of daily life in this region. That’s why we know so much about this time! It was a time of great change and cultural encounters. While the new trade routes caused trade to flourish, the Dutch maintained many of their old traditions, creating a unique blend of Roman and local culture.

The Romans

Back to the Roman age

During the Roman Days in preHistorisch Dorp, you will step into the daily life of the locals from that time. While there weren't many soldiers stationed here, the arrival of the Romans drastically changed the lives of de Dutch people – we will show you how! There are plenty of activities for you to take part in, such as building a bridge or undergoing real soldier training. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get recruited into the Roman Army!

Back to the Roman age

Buildings from the Roman age

The preHistorisch Dorp features several reconstructions of Roman buildings that once stood in the Eindhoven region during the Roman Empire. Take, for example, the gatehouse, which the Romans used as a watchtower to keep an eye on the surroundings. Or perhaps you'd like to visit the work shed where special crafts are practiced. In the Roman herb garden you'll discover many unique scents brought to the Netherlands by the Romans. Finally, in our museum, you can also explore the Runderhoeve, a native Roman house with many Roman elements. With all these buildings you'll feel like you're in a different time!

Historical activities

During the Roman Days, you won't just travel back in time, you can actively participate as well! You can make your own Roman mantle pin, a beautiful object that predates our modern buttons and zippers. Or perhaps you'd like to create a miniature version of a Roman bridge, known for its extra sturdiness due to its curved shape! Do you spot a Roman legionnaire? Rush to the gatehouse and blow the horn to warn the entire village about these dangerous men. But that's not all: you can try hitting pins, try on armor, carve wood, explore a giant loculus, and of course, bake bread.

Want to know what life was really like as a Roman soldier? Take a walk with Baroen and he'll teach you how to handle weapons and train you to be a true legionnaire.
