Archaeology at the preHistorisch Dorp
We use what archaeologists learn from excavations to bring the stories in our museum to life. During the national archaeology days on 15 and 16 June 2024, the museum will host several archaeologists who can identify your archaeological finds. And our historical residents would like to take you on a fun and educational time-travel! You will always be much the wiser after talking to them.
Did you know that the basis of the preHistorisch Dorp lies in experimental archaeology? By imitating certain aspects of the past and conducting experiments, we gain insights into how something could have worked in the past. And that is why you often see a craftsman or woman at work in our museum!
ArcheoFactory
Have you seen the ArcheoFactory at the preHistorisch Dorp? In this modern lab you can become an archaeologist for a while. So, you should definitely visit here during the national archaeology days!
Learn how a real archaeologist works and which modern techniques we use today to research the past. With the help of chemical analyses, DNA reconstructions, ground radar and microscopy, we can now discover so much more about the past!
Hearing, seeing, and doing
During the weekend, a guided tour starts from the medieval market square daily at 1:30 PM. This is the perfect opportunity to learn even more about history and the museum and to ask all your questions. There are also two puppet shows every day.
Would you like to do things yourself? You can learn how to make a fire without matches, bake bread over the fire or take the opportunity to shoot with a bow and arrow.
Free activity booklet
Are you visiting the preHistorisch Dorp at the weekend? Then you will receive a free activity booklet at the entrance. Here you will find more information about everything you can do at the preHistorisch Dorp: from javelin throwing in prehistory to testing the pillory in the Middle Ages. You will also find all kinds of activities and puzzles that tell you more about the past. Stories of historical figures guide you through different eras and the sights and activities in the preHistorisch Dorp. The booklet also contains lots of puzzles to do at home or at the museum. You can even take it home after your visit. The perfect way to look back on your time travels!
